Blue Poppy Flowers Cake

May 18, 2012 by Carrie Sellman

Please, put down your coffee and have a seat.  I feel like today’s post needs to come with a warning label.  It would go something like this… CAUTION: Today’s cake may take your breath away.  Some have experienced intense, gorgeous-induced giddiness when viewing this cake.  Swooning and fainting may also occur.

Okay.  Now that you’re fully prepared, we can proceed.  Seriously, today’s cake is truly magnificent.  It’s bold.  It’s bright.  It incorporates both classic beauty and current trend into one design.  Vibrant blue poppy flowers inspired by an antique painting dance their way up a side of pale yellow fondant.  Blades of grass, shaded from dark to light, curl together creating a soft, ruffle-esk bottom tier.  It’s all enough to make a girl feel faint!  It’s a spectacular Blue Poppy Flowers Cake created by Rachel Skvaril of Fondant Flinger.

Blue Poppy Flowers Cake

Rachel Skvaril of Fondant Flinger shares the story behind her design:

“When most people think of poppies, they think of the “Wizard of Oz” variety – fields upon fields of red blooms.  But, the blue poppy is special.  Unique.  Just like the kindhearted woman this cake was made for.  I was approached by this lucky lady’s husband and daughter to create a cake to not only celebrate Mother’s Day, but also a not-to-be-forgotten birthday surprise.  The special birthday girl owns a local home furnishing store in Kodiak, Alaska, so I took an artistic approach and molded her favorite flower to imitate those that may be seen in a painting hanging in her store.  And since I love all things ruffles, I went with the idea to create blades of grass in shades of green for the bottom tier.

This cake was such a joy for me to make.  Happy Birthday and Mother’s Day to one loved wife, mother, and grandmother.”

In addition to it’s beauty… this cake is a chocolate lover’s dream.  The bottom two tiers were chocolate rum cake layered with chocolate ganache and vanilla swiss meringue buttercream, and the top tier was chocolate rum cake filled with whipped chocolate ganache.

WOW WOW WOW. What a FIND! I stumbled across this site (after baking for 7 years no less!) and saw this and it stopped me in my tracks. I love the poppy as a sugar flower, I have never made one in blue but against this yellow background and that amazing bottom tier I am dying to give this style a try. Fabulous work.

What were the dimensions of each of the tiers?
