some people hate poor little cakebot it seems. He's not very smart though so he likely won't notice.

I considered giving him some personality and letting him respond to posts but it would likely not work very well and would just throw threads off topic.

IMO the negs are more about the content not cakebot. After all, who expects to see discounts for a magazine coming from the developer of a game, it IS a bit odd.

Well, as part of their grand re-opening as "Fun Bits" instead of being "Atomic Operations", they designed the t-shirt of the month at this magazine (which they really like), so they offered a discount to their fans... sharing something they love, which they have a relationship with. It makes sense, if you read their blog posts. The t-shirt is actually really cute. We are huge fans of old-school looking robots here... my sons' room is themed with retro rockets & robots, so we have tons of them around!

There was a irc chat I frequented a few years ago where one member had an irc bot who remembered what people said, kind of, so when you told him to quote a person, he would spew a bunch of somewhat random arrangement of nouns and verbs and other phrases that person said. This bot also would just say a complete random and 99.95% nonsensical statement when spoken to. While it would be hectic on the board it would be fun to me if cakebot did something like that.

responding to queries and searching chat logs for relevant responses is the easy part. Hacking apart the chat software that has no hooks and wading through PHP is what I am not looking forward to.

Again, you should put up a button to let us donate to you for your work, unless of course there is some behind the scenes money going on for this site existing. You should get something beyond personal gratification for the work you do that you don't need to do <3

There is no money coming in though we don't really need it. This site does serve a somewhat selfish purpose of allowing me to work on some more fun stuff it also keeps me up-to-date on technologies that I don't normally use in the course of regular work.

I dunno. Reading the sample articles I'm liking the look of this mag... it's gaming news, kinda, but not reviews. I don't see much of that, but I'm pretty lame as a consumer too so I probably just wasn't paying attention.

Oh, but wow. That's REALY expensive... aren't mag subs usually about that price for TWELVE issues?

They are if you sign up for automatic billing and in fine print say that after the introductory period is up (aka x amount of issues) it'll be $39.00 a month unless you opt out (fine print, most people don't read) which they then sell your info, such as name, address, and what magazines you subscribe to and are interested in to third party affiliates who in turn send you advertisements in the mail with the same low introductory rate and in fine print say what I mentioned above.

Your personal info is marketable.
